Chris Tillman

(16-6)

3.84 (1.27/.241)

138K / 63BB, 19HR

QS: 14

</b>

Tillman has done better against Toronto this season with a 4.32 (1.20/.230) line in three starts. However, since returning from the DL, he has a 4.73 (1.35) and has had neither the velocity or command he enjoyed before the injury. He looked very poor in his last start against Boston allowing three runs on five hits and three walks in 1.2 innings and threw 63 pitches. It seems like he is still being bothered by that shoulder to some extent and it might not bode well at all against a team that has historically hit him well in a park that he has not pitched well at for his career.

Francisco Liriano

(8-13)

4.88 (1.50/.252)

158K / 84BB, 26HR

QS: 10

Liriano's numbers aren't pretty this season, but the bad has mostly lied in Pittsburgh where he left it. Since coming to Toronto, Liriano has put up a 3.35 (1.19/.220) with seven home runs allowed in nine appearances. His K/BB rate has also increased from 1.68 to 2.80, so he has pitched much better since coming to Toronto and throwing to Russell Martin. He has a 2.66 ERA in September and has not allowed more than three earned runs in a start since his second start with the Jays against Houston back in August. He hasn't done well against the Orioles for his career though mostly due to the 22 walks in 41.1 innings. He will look to continue his strong finish to the season with Toronto and improve against the Orioles.

Manny Machado 2/5, 2K

Chris Davis 2/3, HR, 2RBI

Jonathan Schoop 1/3

Pedro Alvarez 0/2

Drew Stubbs 0/2, BB, 2K

Sanchez was a little bit off with his command at times in this one with three walks allowed and had to pitch out of a couple jams, but he allowed only one run in six innings with 10 strikeouts. Gausman allowed five runs though one was due to a throwing error by Machado, but he was tagged for two home runs and didn't look all that sharp. Chris Davis and Buck get thrown out for arguing balls and strikes on pitches that were strikes. The Orioles sure do complain a lot about balls and strikes on pitches that were strikes especially Trumbo and Davis and it's getting real old. If you're going to complain, at least do it on pitches that aren't entirely in the strike zone or strikes of any kind. Pretty stupid to get thrown out of a game because your strike zone recognition sucks and then take the manager with you.

Well, Liriano has pitched well since changing teams and I still have concerns about Tillman's health after his last two starts especially the last one. We'll see how all that works out for him in Toronto.

Always cool to see how the scouts influence how they will pitch to Mancini. No Kim to watch tonight except for any pinch hitting role. I find Kim so interesting to see how he watches pitches, works the count and does his thing. As Aristotle said, just JJ, Manny and Kim actually work the count - well Bourn does also - but all the rest are up there hacking. I'm confident until we get three K's again in the first inning and then await Mancini's at bat. Hope Tillie can be the stopper and get his 17th.

    • Yes, I think that would be a solution that just might work. If you doubled the number of MLB teams it might take a decade or two for talent to catch back up. One of the reasons many strategies of 100 or 150 years ago worked was a much lower talent level, and much bigger spread between the best and worst MLB players. Even just going back 50 years or so it's clear to me one of the reasons pitchers could throw 300 innings was a much shallower pool of hitters, or at the very least choices that favored .220 hitting shortstops with no power. But, what do you think the odds are of Major League Baseball expanding to 60 teams in the next decade? 0.001%? 0.0000001%? The owners would look at such a proposal as an idea for how to slash their shared revenues by 50%, and would probably rather spend the last 20 years of their life fighting it in court than let that happen. This is like the discussions I have with soccer fans on promotion/relegation in the US. Great idea, tremendous benefits, works beautifully in the rest of the world, fosters all kinds of local grassroots interest in the sport, punishes tanking. But current owners would rather gouge their eyes out with their thumbnails than implement it here.
    • I only watched the first two innings.  I didn’t think he’d last much longer because he looked very hittable to that point.  I really question the pitch selection to Rorthsveldt on a 1-2 pitch with a man on third and one out.  He just swung threw a up in the zone fastball, Suarez’ best pitch.  Throw another one same spot, or higher, or in, or even try to bury a changeup low.  Anything to try and get a swing and miss.  But a two seamer (that’s what they called it) down and away? Credit to Suarez for giving us 5.  I don’t really think he’s a starter but he’s getting it done.  Why can he hit 97 in the first inning but not in relief?   I guess it’s a warmup thing.  The 2023-24 Orioles are very good at “winning ugly”.   They find a way more often than not.
    • I hadn’t heard an up to date report on Gillen’s arm.  He’s two years out from that surgery so that’s certainly not good.   I like Lindsey too.  The only real drawbacks are that he’s a RH hitter and the power projection is questionable but he’s got top of the line speed. I’m really not interested in the hit first college types like Amick.   I’d like to see them go HS position player or roll the dice on a Brody Brecht/Jonathan Santucci college pitcher with big stuff and command issues.   At #22 and #32 maybe they can do both.
    • We've really needed Suarez to step up, and so far he has. He does this a couple more times, I might be a believer.
    • Been going downhill ever since Roy started calling for him in the pen. The jinx goes both ways.
    • Suarez traveled 🧳 a long road to arrive with the Orioles . I can’t help but root for him to succeed this season
    • Before the season, I was one in trade Mateo camp . He only played SS , but with Gunnar locking up SS , I was not sure about his value anymore. But when he started playing at Second and CF , he looked like he picking up at these positions.  I think maybe he should be their utility player now.
